About

History

Welcome to the legendary bar known as Gabe’s .  What first started as The Pub in the early 70’s, then became Fox and Sam’s then Gabe and Walker’s then Gabe’s Oasis, then the Picador, and now back to Gabe’s. And While it has gone through many transformations, it is strangely the same – except that it is probably now in the best shape that it has ever been.  We are bringing high quality local, regional and national shows to Iowa City and have made the downstairs and the beer garden a great place to hang out again.  One of our favorite things about this place is that you can do ANY type of music upstairs.  It is not uncommon to see a punk show followed by a metal show with a jam band show the next night and a hip hop show the night after.  We have giant EDM and indy and rock shows too – anything goes.

And our downstairs, handicap accessible bar and stage hosts tons of free shows that range from locals getting their stage legs to great national bands that need a place to play. All of these shows are free (donations welcome).

If you get a chance, stop in and visit our sister bar, the Iowa City Yacht Club.

Thanks to the City of Iowa City and the City Council, we are now an all ages venue until 10pm and then a 19+ venue until 2am!  19 to come, 21 to swallow.

We encourage users to leave stories and memories and simple thoughts about the time they spent at Gabe’s on our Facebook fan page. If anyone has any photos or posters to contribute, please post them as well!

Beer Garden

Our beer garden is open year round (though in the winter you might want to keep your stay out there short). Maintained all year, our beer garden provides tables, seating, and plenty of space to relax (and smoke). Check out the new artwork on the walls while you sip your beer and talk about the “old days” with your friends.

Capacity

The venue upstairs has some tables and chairs, but it is mostly standing room, with limited seating in the bar area as well and room for over 400. This is to ensure that there is max room for rocking out. There is plentiful seating in the downstairs bar area, as well as the beer garden.

Parking

There are a few metered spots directly in front of the building which are free from 5pm – 2am. In addition, to the North around the corner on Iowa Avenue there is a large parking garage. A second parking garage is available to the Southeast, kitty-corner to the building on Washington street.  All parking ramps are free after 3am and free all day on Sundays.

Smoking

Gabe’s is home to one of the most secluded and colorful beer gardens in all of Iowa City. And yes, you can smoke out there too. The state of Iowa does not allow smoking in public buildings during business hours.
