About
History
Gabe’s Oasis was more than just a bar; it was THE bar. It was the one place in Iowa City where, no matter who you were, you could walk in and feel welcome. Sure, it was dirty. Sure, it smelled and the service was crappy. But for many, Gabe’s was a home away from home. The drinks were strong and held within it’s walls was a musical venue that managed to attract some of the biggest (and sometimes best) names in musical history (with the help of one of the best talent buyers in the tri-state area).
There are so many memories attached to Gabe’s that we simply cannot do justice to them all. So instead of writing any more fluff about the Gabe’s of the past, we’ve decided to open the floor to those who lived the legend. We encourage posts from those who have great memories (and damaged eardrums) from the many live shows, as well as fond recollections of bartenders and barflys alike.
We encourage users to leave stories and memories and simple thoughts about the time they spent at Gabe’s on our Facebook fan page. If anyone has any photos or posters to contribute, please upload them as well!

Beer Garden
Our beer garden is open year round (though in the winter you might want to keep your stay out there short). Maintained all year, our beer garden provides tables, seating, tree shade, and plenty of space to relax (and smoke). Check out the artwork on the walls while you sip your beer and talk about the “old days” with your friends. In the winter we will provide propane heaters to keep those who can’t pass up a smoke break warm.
Capacity
The venue upstairs has some tables and chairs, but it is mostly standing room, with limited seating in the bar area as well. This is to ensure that there is max room for rocking out. There is plentiful seating in the downstairs bar area, as well as the beer garden. Bring all your friends, we’ll save a seat for you.
Parking
There are a few metered spots directly in front of the building which are free from 5pm – 2am. In addition, to the North around the corner on Iowa Avenue there is a large parking garage. A second parking garage is available to the Southeast, kitty-corner to the building on Washington street.
Smoking
The state of Iowa does not allow smoking in public buildings during business hours. That said, Gabe’s is home to one of the most secluded and colorful beer gardens in all of Iowa City. And yes, you can smoke out there too.
